  4. This file holds the "Quick Startup" guide, full 
  5. instructions can be found in the Docs file.

  8. Brief Description
  9. =================
  10.  
  11. This program is an NNTP based offline newsreader 
  12. designed to allow  easy, user friendly access to 
  13. the Usenet newsgroups.  It is designed to be used 
  14. with !TCPIP, and a connection to a service provider
  15.  
  16.  
  17. Features
  18. ========
  19.  
  20.   • Doesn't require any programs to be run before 
  21.     reading news, or after posting a message.
  22.     { It accesses the files directly from !MailDir }
  23.   • Adds the signature file to the post 
  24.     automatically
  25.   • Full quoting of messages being replied to.
  26.   • Has no limit on the number of articles in a 
  27.     newsgroup.
  28.   • Uses the ExtEdit protocol to edit a posting, 
  29.     allowing you to use your favorite editor.
  30.   • Correctly replies to posts with a Followup-To: 
  31.     line.
  32.   • Can run from any filing system.
  33.   • Creates an Index so that newsfiles can be 
  34.     reloaded fast.

  37. Disadvantages
  38. =============
  39.  
  40.   • Requires as much memory as the size of the 
  41.     DemNews file, plus 160K for the program, plus 
  42.     2% of DemNews file for an index. (eg 500K 
  43.     newsfile requires 500K+160K+10K = 670K)

  46. Features (aka Bugs)
  47. ===================

  49.   • Sometimes, a few articles can be grouped into a
  50.     wierd group, this happens when there are 
  51.     multiple entries on the Newsgroups: line, and 
  52.     this article appears before the ones in the 
  53.     "normal" group.
  54.   • After a mode change from a large mode to a small
  55.     mode, the windows can be separated.  Clicking on
  56.     the title bar fixes this.
  57.   • No checking is done for disc space when copying
  58.     the news file into a subdirectory of !News, this
  59.     can cause problems if !TCPIPUser and !News are 
  60.     on different filing systems.

  65. Quick Instructions
  66. ==================
  67.  
  68. These instructions are designed to provide a quick 
  69. and easy guide to setting up and running the 
  70. program.
  71.  
  72. 1.  Start up the application
  73.     A "Load file" window will open, initially it 
  74.     will display "folder.DemNews" 
  75.   
  76.     Options available:
  77.     Auto copy  - automatically rename the DemNews file into 
  78.                  !News.news with a unique name (eg 150994)
  79.     Auto Index - automatically save the index generated with
  80.                  the newsfile, so that the index does not have
  81.                  to be calculated again (and read/unread articles
  82.                  are stored).

  85. 2.  Double click on the newsfile that you wish to load,
  86.  
  87.     The main window will open, and an hourglass will be 
  88.     displayed for a short while and then the list of groups 
  89.     will be displayed in the top window.
  90.  
  91. 3.  Select {Iconbar menu} ⇨Create User and type in your alias
  92.     name and the location of your sig file. (Press RETURN on
  93.     the Sig file field)
  94.    
  95. 4.  Select {Iconbar menu} ⇨User ⇨{your user alias}
  96.     this selects you as the main user
  97.    
  98. 5.  Select {Window menu} ⇨Options ⇨Site name and check that
  99.     your site name is set up correctly.
  100.    
  101. 6.  Select {Window menu} ⇨Options ⇨Save options to save
  102.     config file.
  103.  
  104. 7.  Select the group and article to read by double clicking
  105.     on them.
  106.    
  107. 8.  In article mode use Ctrl-N for the next article and Ctrl-P
  108.     for the previous article.
  109.       
  110. 9.  To post a reply to an article, press the menu button, and 
  111.     select "Post Reply".
  112.     When the window appears, cut out any quoted lines that you
  113.     do not wish to quote and type in your follow up text.
  114.     Then 
  115.      A) If using a ExtEdit aware editor (it will say 
  116.         (News).Post.Article at the top of the editor window)
  117.         then close the window and reply "Save" to the 
  118.         Save,Discard,Cancel query.
  119.     Otherwise 
  120.      B) If a "Drag here" window appears, then drag the
  121.         save icon into the "Drag here" window.
  122.  
  123. 10. To post an entirely new article, then press the menu button
  124.     and select "Post", fill in the relevant fields in the header
  125.     (Newsgroups, Subject, and Organisation), the text and then 
  126.     save as in step (4).

  128. 11. To view articles with/without headers then press the menu
  129.     button, and select {Window menu}⇨Options ⇨ Headers".
